I ran a small local GB from the australian keyboard discord server in May 2018 which went fairly smoothly. From this I learned from some mistakes made and iterated to the 2nd version which was sold in a worldwide sale. This ran smoothly except for a few extras ordered after the sale, which took a few months more to arrive due to the shipping carrier chose and proximity to christmas.

= Laser_Ninja is making Tented Iris Cases =

This is a split keyboard PCB sold on keeb.io. I have modified the original case design to allow tenting (raising one part of the keyboard, like a tent).

This tented design of mine is:
+
== The next iteration: Version 3 ==
 +
The next version will have an improved tenting system that is even easier to adjust while keeping the same minimalist aesthetic.

# Affordable.
+
However, this won't be available until some time in 2020, after I purchase my own laser cutter. There are things I need to sort out before producing the cases again. Good news is that once everything is sorted, I can apply my tenting system to any split keyboard and even regular boards.
# Minimalist and has a clean, finished look.
+
# Adjustable via interchangeable standoffs.
+
# Customisable - choose any combination of acrylic top/middle/bottom and screw colour.

===Update 3 (13th September 2018)===

https://i.imgur.com/q9koc89.jpg
All AU orders have been booked in for delivery. International parcels need to be booked in at the same time and packed into a bigger box that will go to my shipping provider.
+

I don't think I can finish packing all orders before the weekend (flying to melbourne meetup) so instead, all orders will be sent on Monday.
+
Kingk22, Matte Black with Snow middle.

Please allow a full month from Monday 17th September for delivery. The shipping provider has stated that delivery times are in the 10-20 days, plus up to 1 week for my parcels to reach the company.

All orders will have a double sided instruction diagram printout on thick 160gsm paper, folded and placed in a thick plastic zip lock bag.

You'll also get 2 sticker sheets and one small gift such as a 1u or 1x2 switch tester with kailh 'cap cracker' box switch and clear keycap.

I haven't had my batches of kailh boxes crack any caps yet, but I would advise against putting artisans or expensive caps on them.

===Update 3.5 (7th September 2018)===

Mini update. All cases have been cut and packed. I'm just waiting for standoffs for a few people.

Shipping boxes and farm fresh bubble wrap have arrived. These boxes are just the right size for up to 2 cases with a decent amount of space for bubble wrap.

All other orders will begin delivery next week.

Thank you for your patience.

= Important note for buyers of my iris cases! (2018) =
 +
It has come to my attention that the right side of the case can be too tight due to the promicro port.

===Update 3 (22nd August 2018)===
+
This can be solved by removing the plastic spacer so that the promicro sits closer to the PCB.

Heyo, quick update on progress. I apologise about having to push back the delivery date.
+
'''You can follow a guide here on accomplishing this: https://imgur.com/a/M9r3EW9'''

If you need to update your delivery details, please get in contact.
+
Without the plastic spacer, the promicro might be too close to the switch pins. Trim down the switch pins as much as possible and apply insulating tape if it looks like it will touch and create a short.

1. Had a problem organising acrylic and had to go with a new supplier. The order has been placed and is being cut to size (to fit the laser bed).

2. Sticky residue was being left on some parts from the masking tape I used, especially after 1-2 weeks time.

I bought two different masking tapes to test. These can last at least 60 days without leaving residue, probably much longer since it isn't left in the sun.

All taped parts will have a pull tab for easy removal.

This means I have to remove all the tape from each already-packed order, then apply the new tape and pack it back up.

3. Buying better boxes. The ones I previously used for iris cases may not hold up to international post and some of the larger orders will not fit.

The new boxes are white on the outside and thicker, with more space for padding or extra items.

Edit: word from the supplier:

Your order has arrived from the fabricator, this morning.

We will deliver on Monday, 27/8/18.

I could fold it twice (instead of once) but I want to minimise the number of fold lines on the instruction sheet so it looks nicer (and it could still get creased on the corners, iris is not a rectangle).

I also didn't put pictures in to show how tenting works. Some of you may not understand so these photos should help. Note that the units below are '''prototypes'''.
+
=== Why is there so much packaging?  (the zip lock/self seal bags) ===
 +
Some parts need to be kept separate such as the aluminium standoffs and thumbscrew feet. If not, the anodisation can get scratched off.

 +
The screws and M2 standoffs are separate because it was easier to pack, this will be consolidated in the future.

https://i.imgur.com/oYVa9oO.jpg
+
I've also left branding/markings/labels off most of the bags so that they can be reused. They are thicker and should last longer ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).

https://i.imgur.com/JUgeSYi.jpg

 +
=== Why is there no tracking or insurance? (international deliveries) ===
 +
It would be extremely expensive. Tracked, insured and with signature on delivery would cost at least $48 AUD to the US (where I have charged $20).

So the longer the standoff, the higher the angle. The tenting leg itself is made up of 3 parts - the standoff, thumbscrew foot and rubber pad (comes applied to the thumbscrew).
+
I will cover any losses or damage personally. For the future and larger sales/GBs, I will investigate getting better rates from DHL, TNT etc.

If you have selected more than one set of standoffs to try different angles, then it is as simple as changing the standoff.
+
=== How come hi-pro layers are not an option? ===
 +
It honestly did not occur to me and I had already started the sale when someone first brought it up. It will be an option in the future.

All buyers have now been contacted. All international orders will be delivered at the same time, estimated to be around the end of the month (31st July 2018).

 +
=== Will it be sold again? When? ===
 +
Yes, but not until early 2019. I have many projects in the works and want to at least wait for the next version of Iris PCBs to come out.

+
These PCBs are still in development but it will be fully assembled. This raises the cost but reduces the build time significantly.

laser_ninja Tented Iris Cases

At the end of 2017, Eric of Aeboards asked me for a simple iris case. What followed was a few months of designing and testing a new tenting system to mod onto the iris case files provided by keeb.io (original seller of the iris keyboard.

The next iteration: Version 3

The next version will have an improved tenting system that is even easier to adjust while keeping the same minimalist aesthetic.

However, this won't be available until some time in 2020, after I purchase my own laser cutter. There are things I need to sort out before producing the cases again. Good news is that once everything is sorted, I can apply my tenting system to any split keyboard and even regular boards.

Can't wait until 2020?

Unfortunatly I can't help you out with one offs and I don't take commissions right now. However, the regular iris case files are available from keebio (check the iris pcb product page for links).

Iris 3.0 PCBs are available and feature all components soldered on, so you just need to solder your own switches in. Much simpler!

Important note for buyers of my iris cases! (2018)

It has come to my attention that the right side of the case can be too tight due to the promicro port.

This can be solved by removing the plastic spacer so that the promicro sits closer to the PCB.

You can follow a guide here on accomplishing this: https://imgur.com/a/M9r3EW9

Without the plastic spacer, the promicro might be too close to the switch pins. Trim down the switch pins as much as possible and apply insulating tape if it looks like it will touch and create a short.

FAQ (for users)

Why are the instructions in it's own bag?

This is to keep it as flat as possible and protect the sheet + stickers. If it was packaged with the iris case, the instructions and/or stickers would be creased and bent as the whole thing is wrapped.

I could fold it twice (instead of once) but I want to minimise the number of fold lines on the instruction sheet so it looks nicer (and it could still get creased on the corners, iris is not a rectangle).

Why is there so much packaging? (the zip lock/self seal bags)

Some parts need to be kept separate such as the aluminium standoffs and thumbscrew feet. If not, the anodisation can get scratched off.

The screws and M2 standoffs are separate because it was easier to pack, this will be consolidated in the future.

I've also left branding/markings/labels off most of the bags so that they can be reused. They are thicker and should last longer ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).

Why is there no tracking or insurance? (international deliveries)

It would be extremely expensive. Tracked, insured and with signature on delivery would cost at least $48 AUD to the US (where I have charged $20).

I will cover any losses or damage personally. For the future and larger sales/GBs, I will investigate getting better rates from DHL, TNT etc.

How come hi-pro layers are not an option?

It honestly did not occur to me and I had already started the sale when someone first brought it up. It will be an option in the future.

Will it be sold again? When?

Yes, but not until early 2019. I have many projects in the works and want to at least wait for the next version of Iris PCBs to come out.

These PCBs are still in development but it will be fully assembled. This raises the cost but reduces the build time significantly.
